They are great about sending checks right away and when you buy 5 packages you get the 6th free (via mailed coupon which I just got!). With Rite Aid there's lots of $3 off #15 and $4 off $20 purchase coupons. Look up huggies under the 1st 2 websites I mentioned. I don't pay more than about $3-4 per package anymore. It's great!

H1N1 (Swine Flu) Prevention Kit

Thanks to Joann Swenson (Linda Bair's sister and Afton Alder's daughter) for passing on this info!

H1N1 FLU SURVIVAL KIT

These are items that should be included in your supplies to protect you from the H1N1 flu germs:

Face masks to keep from spreading germs. (Medical/surgical masks, disposable, and they need to be changed often.)

Cold/cough medicine, cough drops and/or cough syrup.

Pain-relief medication to reduce fever.

Gatorade to replace lost electrolytes.

Hand sanitizer (60% alcohol minimum).

Latex gloves to keep from spreading germs.

Pocket tissues, for sneezing into.

Sanitizer wipes, for counter tops, door knobs, and other “touchables”.

Protect yourself and others from spreading this virus !

Information from Dr. Vinay Goyal. He is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years in regards to face masks:

Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.  If you have swine flu, wearing a mask may help you from spreading the germs to others but the best way to do that is to STAY HOME and away from others!!

Vitamin D Update

Please note I have changed the levels of Vitamin D that are recommended taking daily to help build the immune system in the swine flu post

2000 IU for adults and 1000 for children.

Swine Flu Tips

A friend forwarded on this email to me and these are all very doable, no cost, precautions you can take to avoid swine flu.  Just received a call from my mother in law this morning - one of my nieces just had a baby yesterday and she has been diagnosed with swine flu - she is in isolation in the hospital.  It seems to be hitting pregnant women particularly hard.

Here are some great tips and precautions we can all take.

These tips come from an MD

He also mentioned the benefits of taking Vitamin D, as did Dr. Oz of Oprah fame
.
Boosting the immune system with Vitamin D3 adults  no more than 2000 iu a day and  children 1000 iu daily, is very helpful.

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Thought for the Week

President Spencer W Kimball said:

"As we travel and visit the people throughout the world, we recognize the great temporal needs of our people. And as we long to help them, we realize the vital importance of their learning this great lesson: that the highest achievement of spirituality comes as we conquer the flesh. We build character as we encourage people to care for their own needs. No amount of philosophizing, excuses, or rationalizing will ever change the fundamental need for self-reliance...The Lord declares that herein lies “the agency of man” (see D&C 93:31), and with this agency comes the responsibility for self. With this agency we can rise to glory or fall to condemnation. May we individually and collectively be ever self-reliant. This is our heritage and our obligation."

“Chapter 11: Provident Living: Applying Principles of Self-Reliance and Preparedness,” Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Spencer W. Kimball, (2006),114–23

Storing the Extras

Thought you might find this post from My Food Storage Deals and thought I'd pass it along - great info!!

People ask me what 'extras' (nonfood items) I find useful (or necessary) to store in my storage. I am not sure I have a complete YEAR supply of these items, but these are a few of the necessities I think are important to keep well stocked in your food storage:

*Toilet Paper (what would we do without this???)
*Laundry detergent (I store the liquid soap and a couple big tubs of the el-cheapo powder stuff you can buy 20lbs. for a few bucks--this would be my TRUE emergency soap)
*Hand soap (liquid, bar, sanitizer)
*Paper Towels
*Toothpaste and toothbrushes
*Shampoo & Conditioner
*Deoderant
*Women's sanitary products (is that what you would call those?)
*Bandaids and other basic emergency/first aid supplies
*Basic cleaning supplies (to sanitize your house in case of an emergency/pandemic, etc.) Bleach being one of the most important.
*Extra medication and vitamins (basic pain relievers, fever reducers, antacids, etc. are all good 'basic' medicines that would be good to have in case of an emergency--not to mention medication you need for more serious illnesses)
*Candles*Batteries & Flashlights
*Warm Blankets (in the case the power went out in the winter for a long period of time)*Gasoline (if you have a generator--you can legally store 30 gallons on your property)
*Propane (in ALL shapes and sizes--small canisters, extra BBQ propane)
*Butane (for my small butane stove)

I am sure I forgot several items, but these are some basics that I don't think I could do without in an emergency. If you can think of others...post them in the comments :)

Looking for.....

We would like to put together a list of people in the ward that have the following equipment that they would be willing to share with others:

Pressure cookers
Vac. Sealers for jars or bags
Wheat grinders or any grinders

We are also putting together a list of sisters/brothers would like to get together and can their own stuff using the cannery’s dry pack machine. (It can be check out)

You would just have to buy your own cans and oxygen absorbers.

Leave a comment below if you have any of the items available to share or would like to use the dry pack machine to can your own items.

New Prices at the Dry Pack

A new price list was posted for the Family Home Storage Centers. (Dry Pack)

There is a significant drop in price for most products.

To give you an example: powdered milk used to be $7.60 per can, now it is $5.30. Apple slices was $6.95 per can, new price is $4.90. Most products have dropped in price from $50-$1.00 per can.

This is a good time to dry-pack bulk food and work on long term food storage. These new prices will be good until December

Walk-in hours at the Portland Home Storage Center (PHSC) are every Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9-3 p.m.

Wards, stakes, and private groups can call during hours of operation to schedule a dry-pack session. These scheduled sessions run only on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m., and Saturday mornings from 9-12 p.m. (noon). You must arrive promptly the day of your scheduled dry-packing session. Group size must be a minimum of 8 people and no more than 35, one of which must be a priesthood holder. You must let the PHSC know how many people will be coming on the scheduled date.

Storage buckets:

If there is anyone interested in food grade storage buckets 4-6gal buckets at an unbeatable price here is his information. He is a really nice guy who has been selling them for 13yrs. Bought buckets w/lids for .85 cents and some really nice ones w/a seal in the lid and a handle for $1.50 you can’t beat these prices and he has water barrels for a good price too.

RRL K Phillips “ American Fixtures Inc.”phone: 503-640-5954

Right now Costco has dehydrated hashbrowns for $5.39 a box. One box has a serving of 66 servings.Tib bit info- A family of 4, eating 1 serving twice a week can buy a yr supply of hashbrowns for around $32 (that’s 6 boxes of hashbrowns) If you want more then that, double it. Baking Supplies - part of your storage!

One part of our food storage that seems to be easily forgotten is the importance of having a good supply of baking essentials. Many of us focus on storing the long term food storage items, such as legumes, grains, sugar, powdered milk, etc.

These items are obviously essential, but baking goods are also an important part of your storage. If we were to ever need to live solely out of our food storage, it would be crucial that we have a few basic baking items to help our food storage items easier to use and be more versatile.

The following are some items to store in your food storage:

*Dry Instant Yeast (have at least 2-3 lbs. per person) To help your yeast last longer, keep it in the freezer in its original package.

*Baking Powder (1-2 lbs. per person)

*Baking Soda (1-2 lbs. per person)*Vanilla & other extracts (1 lb. per person)

*Salt (8 lbs. per person—an essential spice for cooking/baking)

*Cornstarch (1-2 lbs. per person)

*Spices (have a good variety of spices to make cooking easy and to help season rather boring food storage items such as wheat, dry beans, rice, etc.)

*Powered butter, eggs, milk are all good items to have in your storage to make baking easier if you were unable to purchase fresh milk and eggs.

*Cocoa (1 lb. per person)

*Vinegar (1-2 gallons per person)

Many of the above items are cheapest at Costco or Sam’s Club. :)
